Early Life & Biography

Daphne Koller was born in Israel on August 27, 1968. She attended the  Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1985 and received a bachelor’s degree. 

In 1986, she received a master’s degree from the same university and completed her PhD at Stanford in 1993 under the supervision of the Israeli-American professor of computer science Joseph Halpern.

From 1993 to 1995 Koller did postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley. She then joined the faculty of the Stanford University computer science department. 

In 2011 Koller was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for contributions to representation, inference, and learning in probabilistic models with applications to robotics, vision, and biology. 

Koller was one of the few females that was awarded the $150 thousand ACM-Infosys Foundation Award in Computing Sciences. Alongside Andrew Ng, they founded  Coursera in 2012 and she served as the co-CEO with Ng, and then became the president.

Daphne Koller became famous in the IT community. Her contributions to online education include being named one of Newsweek’s 10 Most Important People in 2010, Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2012, and Fast Company’s Most Creative People in 2014.

In 2009, Koller and Nir Friedman published a textbook on probabilistic graphical models.
