Peter Bradford Benchley was born on May 8, 1940, in New York City. His father Nathaniel Benchley is also an author and his grandfather Robert Benchley is the founder of Algonquin Round Table.
After graduating from college in 1961, he traveled around the world for a year and wrote about his experience in his first book “Time and a Ticket”, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1964. Benchley spent six months on reserve duty in the Marine Corps, and then became a reporter for The Washington Post.
Career
Benchley arranged a meeting with the publisher-editor Thomas Congdon from the publishing company Doubleday, who offered Benchley an advance of $1,000 leading to the novelist submitting the first 100 pages.
The novel “Jaws”, was published in 1974 and became a great success, staying on the bestseller list for 44 weeks. In 1975, the novel was produced as a film directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss.
Benchley made a lot of money from the Novel sellers and the film rights. His second successful Novel is “The Deep” which was published in 1976. The Novel was a box office success, and one of the top 10 highest-grossing films in the US in 1977. The Novel movie that was published in 1977 was the Best Sound nominee at the 1978 Oscars.
Benchley was a member of the National Council of Environmental Defense and a spokesman for its Oceans Program and also one of the founding board members of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
