Early Life & Biography

David Khari Webber Chappelle was born on August 24, 1973, in Washington, D.C. The son of William David Chappelle III, a professor of vocal performance and the dean of students at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

His mother, Yvonne Seon, worked for Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba as a professor and university administrator at several institutions including Wright State University and Prince George’s Community College.

Chappelle attended Woodlin Elementary School. From a young age, he started making his family laugh and getting inspired by comedians such as  Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. He then attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he studied theater arts, graduating in 1991.

Chappelle started his comedy career on ABC, an American commercial broadcast television network where he starred in the comedy series Buddies. He then created his own satirical comedy sketch series Chappelle’s Show.

He also starred in and co-produced  Michel Gondry-directed documentary Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. Several musical artists, including Kanye West, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Dead Prez, and Jill Scott, are featured in the movie.

In June 2005, Chappelle performed impromptu stand-up shows in Los Angeles. then went on a tour that began in Newport, Kentucky, not far from his Ohio home. He hosted a late-night live television sketch comedy Saturday Night Live in 2016.

Chappelle has gained notoriety as a standup comedian. He earned acclaim for his breakout HBO special Killin’ Them Softly followed by his Showtime special For What it’s Worth. In 2016, Chappelle signed a $20 million per release comedy-special deal with Netflix.
