Early Life & Biography

Andrew was born on November 25, 1835, to a poor family in Dunfermline, Scotland. His family sold all their possessions and borrow £20 they left Scotland to go to America. They started a new life in Pittsburgh where they struggled to find work.

Career

In 1849, Andrew became a telegraph messenger boy in the Pittsburgh Office of the Ohio Telegraph Company, at $2.50 per week ($78 after inflation adjustments) to support his family financially.

At the age of 17, Andrew develop his telegraph skills, he was so impressive that he could receive messages without the need to write them down. In 1853 when Andrew was 18 years old he got hider by Thomas Scott to be his secretary/telegraph operator for $4.00 per week ($124 after inflation adjustments).

During the American civil war in 1861, Andrew noticed that the wooden bridges were easily burnt by the troops and they need iron bridges to replace them. Then he launched the “keystone bridge company” which was a successful company.

Andrew left for new york to find new opportunities, he built America’s first steel plants and hire the best engineers to help him succeed. By 1900 Andrew‘s company was producing more steel than the entire nation of Great Britain.

When Andrew Carnegie became 70 years old he sold the company to jp morgan for $480 million and dedicated his life to serving the world by donating a large amount of money to libraries. On August 11, 1919, Andrew died at the age of 83 leaving behind his name and his generous donation to libraries.

Personal Life

After the death of his mother in 1886, Carnegie married Louise Whitfield, who was 21 years his junior. In 1897, the couple had their only child, a daughter, whom they named after Carnegie’s mother, Margaret.
