How do Gang Starr Make Their Money?

The History of Gang Starr

In 1989, the duo Gang Starr underwent its second split, with Guru the only remaining member. He connected with Day Premier, a rapper from Houston, Texas, who sent him a beat tape that Guru liked.

Guru invited Premier to join Gang Starr and move to Brooklyn with him. That same year, they released their first single “Words I Manifest” and their album No More Mr. Nice Guy. In 1990, Gang Starr was signed to Chrysalis Records by A&R director Duff Marlowe, a former rap music critic.

The label provided the group with major-label distribution and unlimited artistic freedom, which they used to become influential in the hip-hop scene of the decade. Gang Starr helped pioneer the New York City hardcore hip-hop sound and their albums, including Step in the Arena, Daily Operation, Hard to Earn, and Moment of Truth, are highly regarded among rap fans and critics.

Their track “That Thing” appeared on the soundtrack for Spike Lee’s film Mo’ Better Blues, and they provided a track called “Battle” for the soundtrack of the movie 8 Mile.

In 2002, Day Premier left Europe to return to the United States, and Guru continued the group alone during a European tour in 2003-2004 with a different DJ. Four years later, Guru announced that Gang Starr had ended.

Before the end of Gang Starr, their net worth was estimated to be around $15 million.
