Tam Khan was born in 1982 in London to Afghani parents who moved to the UK in 1979 for work. After his birth his parents moved to Essex for a better job opportunity. Tam was subject to a good deal of racism-fuelled bullying.
After many fights with the local kids, Tam’s parents took him to the local boxing gym where he began developing his fighting skills. At the age of 16 he watched a UFC video and was excited to know more about MMA.
Tam joined a jiu-jitsu gym owned by Daniel Burzotta who was training with Royce Gracie in Los Angeles.

Early Career
Tam Khan’s first job in the UK was as a mobile phone salesman.
After moving to Dubai in 2005, Tam didn’t find any local MMA gym so he started giving lessons in local gyms. At first he didn’t have many customers. Then one day, a journalist from 7 Days shows up and does a piece on him.
Tam describes that his phone didn’t stop ringing with offers and new customers ready to subscribe to his Gym.

In 2010, Tam, his friends and some investors opened Tam’s first gym, The Contender. The gym was a huge success, Tamm managed to bring Wanderlei Silva down (MMA legend) and many other leading names in mixed martial arts from around the world. The gym was closed in 2012 due to landlord issues.
